Cole Palmer added to Chelsea’s Conference League squad along with new signing and homegrown star

Chelsea have added Cole Palmer, Trevoh Chalobah and their new 19-year-old midfield signing Mathis Amougou to their Conference League squad – but Wesley Fofana and Romeo Lavia will not play a part in the European competition.

The Blues had until 11pm on Thursday to confirm their updated selection which will be valid all the way to the final in Wroclaw on May 28, and were only allowed to make a maximum of three additions, as per UEFA’s rules.

Palmer was previously left out of the squad for the league phase as Chelsea looked to manage his minutes but he has been brought back in for the knockout stages.

Even without their 22-year-old English superstar, they won all six of their games to top the table.

Chalobah will add depth to the defence after being recalled from his season-long loan to Crystal Palace while Amougou, who joined on deadline day for £12million from St Etienne, will act as a midfield option for the remainder of the campaign.

However, Fofana and Lavia have been left out of the Conference League squad as they are still coming back from big injuries.

Axel Disasi, Renato Veiga, Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei and Joao Felix are among those dropped from Chelsea’s squad after they were either loaned or sold in the January window.

As per UEFA rules, clubs can register up to 25 players on their A list and an unlimited number on their B list.

To be eligible for the latter, the squad member needs to have been born on or after January 1, 2003 and since his 15th birthday been eligible to play for the club for any uninterrupted period of two years, or a total of three consecutive years with a maximum of one loan period to a club from the same association for a period not longer than one year.

Chelsea’s next game in the Conference League will be in the round of 16. Their opponents will be Gent, Real Betis, Copenhagen or Heidenheim.
