Coldplay singer Chris Martin has become the second international star in recent weeks to fall through an onstage trapdoor whilst performing in Melbourne. I’m no expert but maybe it’s time we patched those things up, hey?
The band was playing the fourth show of their Music of the Spheres tour in Naarm at Marvel Stadium when the singer stacked it, causing a big gasp to radiate through the crowd. In footage captured by crowd members, the “Viva La Vida” singer can be seen walking backwards while reading out signs made by audience members when he fell backwards through a hole in the stage.
Thankfully, one of the tech guys below anticipated the 47-year-old’s fall and reached out to catch him just in time.
“That’s uh…not planned,” the shocked singer said.
“Thank you for catching me.”
You can see the moment below.
Here’s another angle of the fall, in case you were wondering what it looked like from the other side of the stage.
You’ve got to admit, Martin recovered beautifully from the frightening fall, quickly making jokes to calm the worried stadium of fans.
During the show, Martin also paid tribute to late cricketer Shane Warne, whom he was close friends with.
“Let’s play this for Shane and his family,” Martin said.
“Our brother, we miss you. Every time we come to Melbourne, it used to be fun to hang out with Shane and all the Warne family.
“I don’t want to talk about it too much or I’ll start to cry.”
It’s not the first time a big international act has fallen into one of those pesky little trapdoors in Melbourne. Earlier this month, Olivia Rodrigo was performing at the Rod Laver Arena — the other big venue in Melbourne — when she ran across the stage and fell straight into an open trapdoor.
Thankfully, she wasn’t hurt by the nasty-looking fall and recovered like a champ too.
Two venues? Two trapdoors? Seal ’em up!!!
