Clip of Shannon Sharpe being warned about dating young women resurfaces amid $50m rape lawsuit

A 2024 Shannon Sharpe interview with comedian Mo’Nique has resurfaced on social media as the NFL great faces a $50 million rape lawsuit filed by a 20-something ex-girlfriend in Nevada.

Fans and critics are both seizing on some advice the 56-year-old podcaster received – and apparently ignored – from his fellow quinquagenarian. Asked about the dating scene for 50-year-olds, Mo’Nique proudly said she’s ‘not 56 and trying’ in an apparent allusion to Sharpe.

‘What you trying to say?’ Sharpe asked the Academy Award winner.

Telling Sharpe she was ‘looking right at’ him, Mo’Nique responded with a minute-long rant about the need to date someone closer to his own age – advice many see as prescient now that he’s being accused of raping the ex-girlfriend who was only 20 when they first met in 2023.

Sharpe has denied the allegations, although he previously offered at least $10 million to settle the case before the lawsuit was filed, his attorney Lanny Davis confirmed this week. What’s more, Davis also confirmed the authenticity of a recorded phone call between Sharpe and his accuser in which he threatens to choke the woman, although the attorney claimed his client was speaking ‘in the heat of the moment’ and the violent threat was ‘not intended.’

Of course, all of this drama was still more than a year away when Mo’Nique went after Sharpe on his Club Shay Shay podcast: ‘You better take your a** and get somebody to love you!’

Sharpe could only respond, ‘damn, Mo,’ as the famed comedian got rolling.

‘Let me tell you what Shannon needs,’ she began. ‘Let me tell you what my baby needs. He needs an old, fat gal, who can bake good cakes, make smothered turkey wings, who gonna rub his feet at the night time and gonna have a sip of his cognac to make him feel better about himself when he comes home at night.

‘You don’t need to 26-year-old girl,’ she continued. ‘You don’t need no 36-year-old girl. This is your auntie talking to you. Take your old a** and get you an old b**** out there that can love you old. You trying to hang out with these young b****es, and you just can’t do it, Shannon. You just can’t do it!

‘When they want you to go for a fourth round, you’re looking at her like: ‘B****, you want some money to go to Starbucks? Because I can’t go no further.’

‘But if you get you an older girl, she’s gonna say: ‘Now hold on, hold on, let me go get you some eggs and cheese and some toast with apple butter because that’s gonna get your energy back up.’

Sharpe could hardly contain his laughter by the time Mo’Nique suggested a friend of hers might make him happy.

‘And I know an old gal and she’ll be good to you. Her name is Elladora. Now when you know somebody named Elladora, she’s old school. Elladora told me to yell you, she said: ‘I think he like red velvet’… She said, ‘you let him know I got something for him.’

Then, like a real pro, Mo’Nique quickly minimized a critical detail about Elladora before launching into a toast.

‘She don’t have no teeth,’ Mo’Nique said. ‘Come on, pick your glass up and clink with me. Come on, now. These young gals will bite you.’

Although Sharpe didn’t take her advice, fans and critics on social media both marveled at Mo’Nique’s insight.

‘Damn spot on,’ one person wrote on X.

‘Wow GOD talking to him right there in his face,’ another added.

One commenter remarked: ‘Wow, This aged very well!!!’

Sharpe has denied the rape accusations made by his 20-something ex-girlfriend and has countered with his own claim that she is trying to score a major financial settlement from a consensual relationship. Davis named the accuser in Monday’s statement that also included several sexually explicit text messages she allegedly sent to the three-time Super Bowl winner.

During Tuesday’s conference call with reporters, Davis alluded to the timing of the lawsuit, which comes after Front Office Sports reported Sharpe could be in line for a $100 million media deal.

‘It’s my reasonable inference,’ Davis said when asked if the timing of the lawsuit was related to the reported financial offers to Sharpe. ‘Others might disagree that they’re very related, that this plaintiff was looking for money.’

In his own Tuesday statement , plaintiff attorney Tony Buzbee claimed ‘an incredibly damning video does indeed exist’ and its contents will ‘speak volumes about Mr. Sharpe and his behavior.’

Both Davis and his client have since demanded Buzbee release an unedited version of the footage, which they suggest will be deceptively changed to incriminate Sharpe.

‘Do not touch, do not tamper, do not alter that tape that we believe, without any doubt, was substantially edited, so that when it’s posted, as we expect it to be, we will immediately explain how edited and warped and distorted and out of context it is,’ Davis said. ‘We will get a copy of that tape, and then we will see whether it’s been tampered with.’

Buzbee has already denied altering the footage.

‘The statement from Sharpe’s newest lawyer falsely accuses Ms. Jane Doe of editing a video — a claim that is not only demonstrably false, but also desperate,’ Buzbee wrote. ‘The lawyer also suggests Ms. Doe refused to make the video available to Mr. Sharpe. Again, this assertion is easily proven untrue.

‘Here’s what is true,’ Buzbee continued. ‘Although Jane Doe never referenced any video or multiple audios that she possesses in the lawsuit that she filed, now that Mr. Sharpe’s lawyer has decided to broach that subject, we will address it.’

That aforementioned video ‘will be played to the jury,’ Buzbee wrote in his statement.
