China Exposes U.S. Cyberattacks on Key Research Institutes, Calls for Immediate Halt

Cairo: Hani Kamal El-Din

China has publicly accused the United States of launching a series of malicious cyberattacks targeting its advanced research institutes and high-tech companies. The allegations were made during a press briefing by Guo JiaKun, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who called on Washington to immediately cease its cyber espionage activities.

The accusations follow the release of a detailed report by China’s National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team (CNCERT), which revealed that U.S. intelligence agencies had targeted a leading research institute specializing in advanced materials and a major high-tech company in the smart energy and digital information sectors. According to the report, these cyberattacks were aimed at stealing sensitive commercial and intellectual property data.

“We have taken note of the report,” Guo stated, emphasizing that the findings once again expose the U.S. government’s role in orchestrating malicious cyber operations against China. He added that Beijing is deeply concerned about these actions and urged the U.S. to stop its cyberattacks immediately.

Details of the Cyberattacks

The CNCERT report highlights that the cyberattacks were highly sophisticated and targeted critical sectors of China’s technological development. The advanced materials research institute is known for its groundbreaking work in developing next-generation materials, while the targeted smart energy company plays a pivotal role in China’s transition to renewable energy and digital infrastructure.

Guo stressed that such attacks not only undermine China’s national security but also threaten global cybersecurity. “Cyberspace is closely linked to the national security and economic prosperity of all countries,” he said, calling on the U.S. to reflect on its actions and adhere to international norms.

China’s Response and Call for International Cooperation

In response to the cyberattacks, China has vowed to take necessary measures to safeguard its cybersecurity and protect its national interests. Guo reiterated that Beijing will not tolerate any form of cyber aggression and will continue to strengthen its defenses against such threats.

Moreover, China has called for greater international cooperation to combat cybercrime and ensure a secure digital environment. “The U.S. should stop its political smear campaigns, act responsibly, and work with the international community to maintain peace and security in cyberspace,” Guo stated.

Implications for U.S.-China Relations

The revelations come at a time of heightened tensions between the U.S. and China, particularly in the realms of technology and trade. The cyberattacks are seen as part of a broader strategy by the U.S. to curb China’s technological advancements and maintain its global dominance.

China’s public exposure of these cyberattacks is likely to further strain bilateral relations. However, Beijing has emphasized its commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue and cooperation, while also ensuring that its cybersecurity remains uncompromised.

As cyber warfare becomes an increasingly prominent tool in international relations, China’s exposure of U.S. cyberattacks underscores the growing importance of cybersecurity in safeguarding national interests. Beijing’s call for an immediate halt to these attacks reflects its determination to protect its technological advancements and maintain its position as a global leader in innovation.

The international community will be closely watching how the U.S. responds to these allegations, as the incident highlights the urgent need for global cooperation to address the escalating threats in cyberspace.
