China has announced a package of tariffs on a range of American products in retaliation against a 10 per cent tariff on Chinese imports imposed by president Donald Trump.
The Chinese foreign ministry on Tuesday said Beijing has imposed 15 per cent tariffs on coal and liquefied natural gas, while oil and agricultural equipment from the US will face 10 per cent higher tax. The new tariffs on US exports will start on 10 February, the ministry said.
The Trump administration’s levies on Chinese goods, which Beijing called a “serious violation” of international trade rules, came into effect at 12.01am Eastern Time on Tuesday.
The Chinese government had pledged to introduce “corresponding countermeasures”, signalling its intention to respond with retaliatory duties while challenging the tariffs at the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Shortly after taking office, Mr Trump announced the US would impose a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, alongside the 10 per cent tariff on Chinese goods.
The measures against Mexico and Canada were paused on Monday.
