Childhood and Motherhood thwarts an attempt to circumcise two girls under the age of 11 in Nag Hammadi
The National Committee for the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation, co-chaired by the National Council for Women and the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, announced the thwarting of an attempt to mutilate the genitals of two sisters, both under the age of 11, in the Nag Hammadi Center in Qena Governorate.
Dr. Sahar El-Senbati, head of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, explained that the General Administration for Child Rescue had received a report. A family intends to perform female genital mutilation, also known as female circumcision, on two sisters, the younger of whom is 10 years old and the older of whom is 11 years old, in Nag Hammadi, Qena Governorate. The head of the council directed that the necessary measures be taken quickly and that all measures be taken to prevent harm to the two sisters, as the incident was referred to the Child Protection Unit in Qena Governorate to verify the incident and prepare a report on it. The committee immediately went to the family’s residence and, after discussing the matter with the father and mother, they acknowledged that it was an idea put forward for discussion, but no action has been taken so far. Al-Senbati added that a family counseling session was held for the girls’ families about the dangers and harms of this crime and the legal responsibility resulting from it, and the girl’s parents signed a statement not to commit this crime. She extended thanks and appreciation to the General and Sub-Unit for Child Protection in the governorate for quickly taking the necessary measures to remove the danger from the two girls and taking the necessary measures to protect children at risk and for the efforts they are making within the governorate. "Al-Sanbati" directed the necessity of following up on the condition of the two girls within the family on an ongoing basis to ensure that they are not exposed to danger at a later time. … Female genital mutilation is a crime under the law and there will be no leniency in taking all necessary measures against those involved in it. The National Council for Childhood and Motherhood is the body entrusted with protecting children from all forms of violence and does not hesitate to combat this crime that religion and medicine have disavowed and that has claimed the lives of many innocent girls without guilt.
Counselor Sanaa Sayed Khalil, Vice President of the National Council for Women, expressed his deep sadness and dismay at the continued existence of these practices and the abnormal beliefs among some families that this crime is being committed against their daughters, despite the state’s ongoing and continuous attempts to eradicate it, stressing that the National Committee for the Eradication of Female Genital Mutilation is determined to continue its pledge and commitment to eradicating this crime and protecting Egypt’s girls with all its strength.
The committee appeals to citizens to quickly report these incidents and everything related to violations of children’s rights through the mechanisms of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood.
