ChatGPT is down across the US as users report ‘bad gateway’ error when using the AI tool

ChatGPT is down across the US as users report seeing a ‘bad gateway’ error message when using the AI tool.

Downdetector, a site that monitors online outages, shows issues hit the OpenAI-owned platform around 7am ET.

The error message indicates that one server received an invalid response from another, creating a communication breakdown.

Many users have shared their frustrations on X, saying they ‘feel lost without it.’

‘Seriously, how am I supposed to brainstorm, write, and research without my AI assistant,’ an X user posted.

According to the most recent data, ChatGPT has 300 million weekly active users and 123.5 million daily active users. It is unclear how many users are experiencing issues.

The outage comes as OpenAI founder Sam Altman backs President Donald Trump’s new AI venture, Stargate, which will see a $500 billion investment within four years.
