Champions Trophy hosts Pakistan crash out after New Zealand’s five-wicket victory over Bangladesh

Pakistan were knocked out of their first global tournament as hosts for 29 years on Monday when New Zealand beat Bangladesh by five wickets.

The result in Rawalpindi, settled by Rachin Ravindra’s hundred, sent the Black Caps into the semi-finals with two wins from two and they now face India in what is effectively a dead rubber.

However, it also meant Pakistan are eliminated alongside the Bangladeshis, as neither is yet to win with one left to play.

Meanwhile, England’s bid to win a maiden Champions Trophy was dealt a blow after Brydon Carse was ruled out through injury.

The Durham fast bowler has been replaced in the 15-man squad by Rehan Ahmed, following approval from the International Cricket Council’s event technical committee.

Carse aggravated a toe wound that required stitches during last weekend’s defeat to Australia at the Gaddafi Stadium and was unable to train at the stadium’s academy ground on Monday, ruling him out of tomorrow’s must-win Group B fixture against Afghanistan here in Lahore.

Further checks showed that the cut was infected and with the final group game against South Africa, the country of his birth, taking place in Karachi this coming Saturday, England applied to make an official change to their travelling personnel.

The 29-year-old Carse arrived in Pakistan nursing the injury and only had the stitches removed 48 hours before the showdown with the Australians.

He sat out the final two one-day internationals of the recent tour of India because of the issue and was off colour in returning expensive figures of 7-0-69-1 against the world champion Australians: a rare blemish on what has been an otherwise excellent winter on the international scene.

‘The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 has approved Rehan Ahmed as a replacement for Brydon Carse in the England squad,’ read an ICC statement.

Ahmed is expected to arrive in Pakistan before the fixture versus the Afghans, but will not be considered for selection.

Jamie Overton will come in for the clash against the Jonathan Trott-coached Afghans, having done so during the middle match of the 3-0 defeat to India before succumbing to hamstring and foot niggles himself.

Fellow all-rounder Ahmed, who was in the touring party in India but subsequently returned home, adds an extra spin element to England’s seam-heavy bowling going forward.

The development is a blow to Carse, but, at the start of an Ashes year, England are clearly not taking any chances with a player who began his Test career this winter with 27 wickets in five appearances.

And with the extent of his problem to be examined further, should a surgical procedure be required it would potentially jeopardise his £100,000 contract with Indian Premier League side Sunrisers Hyderabad, starting next month.

England’s loss to Australia, their fifth straight in one-day internationals, came after posting a Champions Trophy high 351 for eight and former Test captain Root has backed the under-pressure Jos Buttler to oversee a turnaround in fortunes.

‘I certainly think that this team are doing more things right than maybe some of the teams I captained were doing,’ Root said.
