Celtic produced a commendable late rally against Bayern Munich in a 2-1 first-leg home defeat to a giant of the European game.
Who stood tall against Harry Kane and Co at the backline and which of Bayern’s galaxy of stars shown brightest in an entertaining tie at Parkhead…
CELTIC (4-3-3):
KASPER SCHMEICHEL – 6: No chance with blistering Olise strike or Kane’s volley. Made a few crucial saves and his experience was an asset.
ALISTAIR JOHNSTON – 7: Got tight to Sane and imposed himself on the game from the off. Tenacious in the tackle. Always up for the battle.
CAMERON CARTER-VICKERS – 6: Reassuring presence in the Celtic backline who played well in the main again. Remained focused on and off the ball.

Adam Idah endured a largely frustrating night as an isolated forward for Celtic
AUSTON TRUSTY – 6: Turned by Olise early on but made big block from Kane. Much more comfortable with Carter-Vickers alongside.
GREG TAYLOR – 5.5: Couldn’t get out to Olise in time to shut down the opener. Stuck to his task as whole defence endured a gruelling night.
ARNE ENGELS – 6: Caught napping at the far post for Bayern’s second. Didn’t see much of the ball but £11m man showed glimpses of quality.
CALLUM McGREGOR – 5.5: Turned into trouble that saw Celtic pinned in at the start of the second half and concede. Swarmed in the engine room.
REO HATATE – 6.5: Led the press well with Idah and was disciplined. Missed one half chance and another who saw little of the ball.
NICOLAS KUHN – 7: Denied an incredible flying start when first-minute goal was chopped off. Dangerous on the break with his pace.
ADAM IDAH – 5.5: Isolated up top in the main and got little change out of Bayern central defenders but worked his socks off out of possession.
DAIZEN MAEDA – 7.5: Was his usual energetic self off the ball and instinctive finish offered Celtic a lifeline. Vital spark once again for the hosts.
SUBSTITUTES: Jota (Idah 65), Schlupp (Taylor 65), Hyun-Jun Yang (Kuhn 77).
MANAGER: BRENDAN RODGERS – 6.5: Will be proud of his side’s late rally and high energy levels.

Daizen Maeda scrambles the ball home to provide Celtic with a crucial lifeline
BAYERN MUNICH (4-2-3-1):
MANUEL NEUER – 6: Dealt with a few sloppy backpasses and little hope of keeping out Maeda’s effort. Took a few risks off his line.
KONRAD LAIMER – 6: Galloped forward down the right flank which created space for others. His final touch and pass a tad careless at times.
DAYOT UPAMECANO – 6: Brilliant ball to pick out Olise for the opener. Couple of iffy moments late on and survived borderline penalty call.
ERIC DIER – 6: England international was solid and didn’t put a foot wrong. Slow to react in the box when ball broke to Maeda for 2-1.
RAPHAEL GUERREIRO – 5.5: Bombed forward from the left flank but almost let Maeda in with careless backpass and pace of Kuhn troubled him.
JOSHUA KIMMICH – 7.5: Sets the tempo for club and country. Natural successor to German legend Philipp Lahm had another efficient game.
LEON GORETZKA – 7: Broke up counter-attacks and often started Bayern’s more potent forward moves. Part of a high-class midfield unit.

Harry Kane celebrates his goal for Bayern Munich just after half-time
MICHAEL OLISE – 8: Stunning strike broke the deadlock. Former Crystal Palace man found space and was a persistent threat.
JAMAL MUSIALA – 6.5: Tormented Scotland in the Euros last summer and popped up everywhere in attack. Faded a little in the second period.
LEROY SANE – 6: Fluffed a good opening on the half-hour mark. Saw deflected effort fly wide but mainly well marshalled by Johnston.
HARRY KANE – 7: Frequently dropped deep to link the play. Missed a big chance before half-time but thumped home the second.
SUBSTITUTES: Kingsley Coman (Sane 64), Serge Gnabry (Olise 65), Hiroki Ito (Guerriero 78), Thomas Muller (Musiala 87)
MANAGER: VINCENT KOMPANY – 6.5: Controlled, deserved victory but his team wobbled at the end.
REFEREE: JESUS GIL MANZANO (Spain) – 6.5.
