Blues-Oilers NHL game turns into wild melee as goaltender Jordan Binnington tees off on Corey Perry

The NHL game between the Oilers and Blues turned into a melee less than 10 minutes in as St. Louis goaltender Jordan Binnington threw several punches at Edmonton star Corey Perry.

Eight minutes into the game, Perry attempted to corral a loose puck and went into the goalie crease to do it, making contact with a downed Binnington and picking up the initial penalty for interference.

Binnington did not like the deliberate move and immediately got up and punched Perry in the back of the head, sending him to the ice.

That wasn’t enough for the 2019 Stanley Cup champion, who again went after Perry and punched him again with his left hand glove. That started the chaos at large.

Almost every player on the ice jumped in to defend their respectively teammate, with the officials trying to break up as much as possible.

The linesmen could not separate Perry and Binnington before the goaltender landed one more left hook on the Oilers’ forward, sending him to the ice.

A few other little scraps broke out, with Perry and Jake Neighbours being the ones to officially drop the gloves.

Binnington picked up four minutes in penalties on two separate roughing minors, while Neighbours got five for fighting for sticking up for his goaltender.

Perry ended the melee with seven minutes, with a fighting and and a goalie interference infraction  to his name.

The Western Conference clash was a critical one as the NHL’s regular season winds down. Both teams entered the game on 93 points, although the Blues have played two more games than the Oilers.

Both teams had not clinched a playoff spot yet, while neither was mathematically eliminated.

The Oilers defeated the Blues 4-3, scoring the game-winning goal with under 20 seconds left in the game, prolonging St. Louis from clinching a playoff berth.
