Okay, not to be dramatic but Black Doves might be my favourite Christmas show ever. Although, it’s not technically a Christmas movie, for a girly who needs a little more than being told to ‘believe in the holiday spirit’, this show was everything! And thankfully, Netflix has confirmed that Black Doves will be coming back for Season 2!
The announcement came in a 34 second video that Netflix dropped on December 20, 2024. In the clip, Keira Knightley who plays Helen Webber and Ben Whishaw who plays Sam, clink champagne glasses (obviously) at a holiday-themed bar.
Keira kicks things off with a cheerful “Here’s to Black Doves Season One,” and Ben chimes in with “Don’t forget Season Two, darling,” before they dramatically drop golden bullets into their drinks. Although the clip kind of gave us nothing, we’ve done a little digging to find out what is in store for the spy thriller’s second season.
Here is everything we know about Black Doves Season 2
There will be Season 1 spoilers in here, so please don’t @ us. You’ve been warned.
Black Doves Season 2 plot
The show’s creator Joe Barton told Radio Times he found “inspiration” for the series when reading about the real ‘spy cops’ scandal that took place in the UK.
So, in Season 1, we follow Helen Webb who juggles her life as a wife, mother, and undercover spy for the Black Doves — a private espionage organisation. The drama kicks off when her secret lover, Jason (Andrew Koji), is murdered prompting her to team up with her old spy bestie Sam to uncover the truth behind his death while navigating a web of political intrigue and personal betrayal.
You can relieve some of that with the trailer here:
Whilst we do find out who killed Jason at the end of the season, we’re left with more questions than answers.
Will Helen really be heading to No. 10 Downing Street with her husband, Wallace (Andrew Buchan), potentially becoming the next First Lady?
Will she continue her undercover work for Mrs Reed (Sarah Lancashire) as part of the Black Doves?
And what about Sam? Is he really going to take up an offer from his former nemesis, Hector Newman (Luther Ford)?
And lcan we talk about that cliffhanger involving the random mysterious woman seen with Reed at the end of Season 1. Who is she? A new ally or a lurking threat? I need to know!! And I think we can bet on Season 2 covering at least some of those questions.
Black Doves Season 2 cast
The good news is that your favourite characters are back in action! Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw will reprise their roles as Helen and Sam, respectively.
Sarah Lancashire will return as the spymaster who loves to longingly look out windows aka Reed, along with Andrew Buchan as Wallace — Helen’s hubby. We can also expect to see Omari Douglas as angel-face Michael, Sam’s ex-partner, and Luther Ford as Hector Newman.
Black Doves Season 2 release date
Now for the million-dollar question: when can we expect Season 2? The first season just premiered on December 5, 2024, so we might have to exercise some patience here.
Showrunner Barton has hinted that filming will start next year but cautioned fans not to hold their breath for a holiday release.
“To have something ready for next Christmas would be impossible,” Barton told The Hollywood Reporter. “Then you’d be in a situation where we’d have to make people wait two years for the Christmas after that, which should just be too long.” So it looks like we’ll be waiting at least until 2026 for our next fix of espionage drama. I know, I’m crying too.
Fans are buzzing with excitement over the announcement. One user on X (formerly Twitter) declared it “the smartest decision Netflix made in a while,” while another expressed relief at the return, saying they felt there was “unfinished business”. There’s even calls for a Williams (Ella Lily Hyland) and Eleanor (Gabrielle Creevy) spinoff, which I simply NEED now.
So there you have it! Black Doves season 2 is officially on its way and I reckon this is your sign to pour yourself a cheeky glass of champagne to celebrate!! IYKYK.
You can watch the first season of Black Doves on Netflix now.
