As the temperature drops, the air gets drier, showers get hotter and our hair starts breaking. Winter is not particularly kind to anything really, but it can be particularly horrible to your skin and hair. We’ve written about our favourite face masks, and now we’re detailing our best hair masks.
I know my hair looks flat, frizzy and dehydrated as we move into the cooler months. The dry air and high propensity for drizzle are a nightmare. And my true and wholesome love for scalding showers doesn’t do much to help the situation.
When I reach the point that my hair is living in a bun because it’s too scraggly to be left out, these are the hair masks that I will always turn to for help. And you should too.
Aesop Rose Hair and Scalp Moisturising Masque
A weekly herbal treatment for not just your hair, but your scalp too. Scalp health is important to your overall hair health, so it’s nice to treat the skin on your head to a little love too. This hair mask is enriched with moisturising rose which nourishes and repairs, helping to lock in hydration.
Davines Oi Hair Butter
This mask drenches the hair with nourishing roucou oil, reducing frizz while imparting glossy shine. What’s unique about it is that it can be used in place of conditioner, as a classic hair mask, or as a pre-shampoo treatment. While it’s intensely hydrating, it’s suitable for fine hair texture, as well.
Olaplex No.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask
If you experience breakage or colour-related damage, this bond-building mask from Olaplex is perfect. Unlike the original No.3 treatment, it’s incredibly hydrating, and can be used on damp hair after shampooing. It restores gloss and bounce while strengthening wear or brittle strands.
Oribe Gold Lust Transformative Masque
An icon for a reason, Oribe’s Gold Lust mask rebuilds individual strands, smoothing cuticles and repairing the look of damage. It’s rich, so a top choice for those with coarse, dry or thick hair. And like the rest of the Oribe product lineup, the smell is incredible.
Crown Affair The Renewal Mask
Gwyneth Paltrow tried this mask and loved it so much, she financially invested in the brand. Formulated with hydrating tsubaki seed oil and yuzu, Crown Affair’s Renewal Mask is designed to hydrate from the inside out, leaving the hair glossy and weightless. It’s not heavy, so a good option for fine hair that’s still prone to frizz or dullness.
Christophe Robine Regenerating Mask
This is rich, creamy and is the closest thing to a blow out in treatment form. It’s silicone free so great for coloured hair, and the prickly pear extract is said to protect against environmental damage. Try it if you want to maintain shine and protect your highlights.
Klorane Repairing Mask
This mask is packed with organic cupuacu butter, so it immediately repairs dry, brittle or broken hair. It can be used in-shower as a classic treatment, or left in overnight for more intensive nourishment. It even works during the day if you want to comb it through and slick your hair back. Not bad for a French pharmacy staple.
Kérastase Nutritive Hair Masque for Dry Thick Hair
This mask by Kérastase has a melting texture that instantly softens and smooths out frizz. It’s rich and designed to nutritionally replenish, making it useful if you colour, bleach or chemically process your hair. The protein component strengthen and repairs, while fatty acids leave each strand soft and detangled.
Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask
There’s a reason this mask has a permanent spot on Mecca’s hall of fame. It’s packed with hair loving ingredients, like Rosehip oil, which provides essential fatty acids to combat frizz, and Algae extract, which delivers minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, and vitamins direct to the hair and scalp. There’s also B-vitamins, which have bene proven to give that just-left-the-salon sheen to your locks.
