Beijing calls on Washington to cancel Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan

China has opposed US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit, scheduled to Taiwan in August.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian stressed that this visit will seriously violate the “one-China” principle, harm China’s state sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the United States will be responsible for the consequences.

China demands “to stop all official contacts with Taiwan and stop raising tensions in the Taiwan Strait.”

The US actions, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, will send a false signal to the island’s independence advocate forces.

Earlier, the Chinese government demanded that the United States abandon a deal to supply Taiwan with weapons worth $108 million.

Contact between mainland China and Taiwan ceased in 1949 after the Kuomintang forces were defeated in a civil war with the Chinese Communist Party, and they settled on the island. Communication resumed in the late 1980s.
