Bayern Munich star singles out Harry Kane after Champions League defeat – with the England captain guilty of missing a sitter in loss to Inter Milan

Thomas Muller provided a characteristically candid response when questioned on the reason for Bayern Munich’s Champions League first leg loss by Inter Milan.

The German giants suffered a demoralising 2-1 home defeat by the Italians, with goals from Lautaro Martinez and Davide Frattesi putting them in a commanding position ahead of next week’s return fixture.

However, things could have been very different for the club that will host the final of of the competition on May 30, when Harry Kane squandered a chance with the score goalless.

In the 25th minute, the Englishman fluffed his lines from close range after being played in by Michael Olise, with Martinez then breaking the deadlock ten minutes later.

Muller, who is set to leave the Bavarian giants at the end of the season, thought he’d snatched a late draw when he struck in the 85th minute. But it was Inter who would have the last laugh with Frattesi’s finish on the counter.

After the match, Muller did not shy away from highlighting the chance Kane missed early on and admitted the outcome might have been different if the Three Lions skipper converted his opportunity.

‘We unfortunately missed a big chance in the first half with Harry, that would’ve given us a different feeling,’ he said. ‘Inter have good players with the ball who are able to take the pace off the game and slow it down, then play long balls to their strikers.

‘They have experienced and physical players – it wasn’t a walk in the park and we didn’t expect it to be. We created chances in the second half but unfortunately couldn’t convert them.’

Kane may have been culpable on Tuesday night but his goals have helped fire Bayern to the cusp of regaining their German crown.

The striker has netted 34 goals in 40 games this season, including 10 in the Champions League.

Since arriving from Tottenham for a £100million fee in 2023, he has scored a staggering 78 goals in 85 matches in all competitions.

Bayern will need their talisman to step up again next week if they are to overturn their first-leg deficit and progress to the Champions League semi-finals.
