Baybars Al-Khayyat Mosque in Al-Darb Al-Ahmar is listed among the Islamic monuments

 Sherif Fathi, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, issued a ministerial decision to register the Baybars Al-Khayyat Mosque on Al-Judriyah Street in the Darb Al-Ahmar area in Cairo among the Islamic, Coptic, and Jewish monuments.

 

The Minister of Tourism and Antiquities explained, This decision comes within the framework of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ keenness to preserve Egyptian antiquities, which are considered a heritage for the entire world. The mosque also has historical and archaeological importance as it is from the Mamluk era and has distinct architectural elements, decorations and very precise writings, in addition to many of the conditions and clauses that it specified. Qom Antiquities Protection Law No. 117 of 1983 AD, and its amendments.

Dr. Muhammad Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, indicated that it was decided to register this mosque after the approval of the Permanent Committee for Islamic and Coptic Antiquities and after taking all necessary measures in this regard, noting that The dome of the mosque had been registered before 1951 AD, among the Islamic and Coptic antiquities, and that the new ministerial decision came to register the mosque as a whole.

For his part, Dr. Gamal Mustafa, head of the Islamic, Coptic, and Jewish Antiquities Sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said,&nbsp ; Baybars Al-Khayyat Mosque was established by Prince Sayfi Baybars bin Abdullah bin Abdul Karim bin Omar, a relative of Sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri. He was famous for having begun his professional life as a private tailor for Sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri, as stated on the inscription tape affixed under the ceiling of the Qibla iwan. Then he took over The position of Amir Akhwar was senior, where he accompanied Sultan al-Ghuri on all his travels, then he assumed the position of lieutenant colonel, and was dismissed from him.

Baybars al-Khayyat participated with Sultan al-Ghuri in the fight against the Ottoman armies in the Levant, and was killed in the Battle of Marj Dabiq in the year 1516 AD. ———
