Alicia Silverstone Cast in Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Bugonia’

Yorgos Lanthimos has added Alicia Silverstone to the star-studded cast of “Bugonia,” his upcoming sci-fi conspiracy movie led by Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

Best known for her iconic role as Cher in “Clueless” (which she reprised last year during the Super Bowl), Silverstone memorably appeared in Lanthimos’ 2017 psychological thriller “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.”

The Oscar-nominated filmmaker’s latest movie follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. The script is from Emmy winner Will Tracy (“Succession,” “The Menu”), based on the 2003 South Korean comedy “Save the Green Planet.” Details of Silverstone’s role are being kept under wraps.

“Bugonia” was developed by “Parasite” producer CJ ENM with Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen at Square Peg. Lanthomis, Aster and Knudson are producing the project with Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe (Element Pictures), alongside Stone (Fruit Tree) and Miky Lee and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko (CJ ENM). The production is financed by CJ ENM and Fremantle.

Focus Features, which won domestic rights to the project out of Cannes, will release the film in theaters on Nov. 7, 2025, with Universal Pictures distributing internationally — excluding Korea, where CJ ENM will release.

Silverstone most recently starred in the Netflix drama “Reptile,” which debuted at No. 1 on the streamer, and the XYZ Films dark comedy “Krazy House,” which premiered at Sundance earlier this year. Her next film, A24’s “Y2K” — from Kyle Mooney and Evan Winter, and produced by Jonah Hill and Chris Storer — screened at SXSW and is due in theaters this December. Silverstone also starred in Imran J. Khan’s “Mustache,” which won the audience award at SXSW’s 2023 edition and she recently wrapped Justin Kelly’s “The Bird and the Bee.” Other recent projects include “Perpetrator,” “Senior Year,” “The Lodge,” “Valley Girl” and the Paramount TV series “American Woman.” In 2021, Silverstone was nominated for a Daytime Emmy award for her performance in Netflix’s “The Baby-Sitters Club” series.

She is represented by UTA, Untitled Entertainment and Gang, Tyre, Ramer, Brown & Passman.
