Al-Youm Al-Sabea’s lens monitored live scenes of Al-Rawda Mosque in North Sinai, which on this day in 2017 witnessed one of the bloodiest events in Egypt’s contemporary history. On Friday, November 24, the mosque was subjected to a bloody terrorist attack by armed terrorists, which resulted in the martyrdom of more than 309 worshipers and the injury of 128 others. This attack left a deep impact on the hearts of the village’s people and the entire Egyptian community.
Despite the ugliness of the attack, Al-Rawda Mosque witnessed a new return to life, as rituals were continuously held there. The latest renovation that the mosque witnessed was the complete refurnishing of the mosque a few days ago, under the supervision of the North Sinai Endowments Directorate, according to what was confirmed by Engineer Hisham Al-Kashef, Director of the Department. Engineer Al-Kashef explained that the mosque extends over an area of 600 square meters, while its minaret is about 40 meters high. He added that the mattress was completely renewed a few days ago to keep up with the requirements of the place.
In a special statement by Sheikh Muhammad Raziq, the imam of the mosque, he said that the memory of this tragic day cannot be forgotten. Sheikh Muhammad stated that he had begun his sermon about “Muhammad, the Messenger of Humanity” on the occasion of the Prophet’s birthday, only to suddenly find himself facing terrorists who stormed the mosque and opened fire on the worshipers. He recounted the moments of chaos he experienced, as he was forced to hide next to the pulpit amid the screams of worshipers who tried to escape the attack, but he was shot in the knee, and then found himself lying among the martyrs and injured in a tragic bloody scene.
In addition to the efforts to restore the mosque, many ministries and government agencies provided significant financial assistance to contribute to compensating the village people and implementing development projects to reconstruct the village. The total donations provided amounted to 164.7 million pounds, distributed between 65 million pounds from the Ministry of Social Solidarity, 81.2 million pounds from the Ministry of Housing, 16.5 million pounds from the Ministry of Endowments, in addition to two million pounds from Al-Azhar Al-Sharif.
These funds were allocated to implement comprehensive development projects that include rebuilding homes, improving infrastructure, and establishing service projects that help raise the standard of living of the people of Al-Rawda village, which was subjected to this tragic accident.
