The Egyptian Women’s Issues Foundation held a dialogue table that addressed the issue of economic violence and its psychological effects on women. A group of experts in the fields of economics and mental health participated, in addition to women’s rights activists and civil society representatives.
Objectives of the dialogue table. :
1. Highlighting the concept of economic violence: which includes all forms of economic control that prevent women from achieving financial independence.
2. Discuss the psychological dimensions of economic violence: how it leads to negative psychological effects, such as feelings of helplessness, low self-confidence, and worsening dependency.
3. Reviewing women’s experiences: through real stories of cases exposed to economic violence, to illustrate the profound impact on their lives.
The table covered the following topics:
• Defining economic violence: Understanding the ways economic control and depriving women of access to financial resources.
• Forms of economic violence: such as depriving women of work, controlling family resources, and preventing them from making financial decisions.
• Psychological dimensions: examining how economic violence leads to anxiety, depression, and psychological instability.
• Support and protection mechanisms: through legislation, awareness, and providing psychological and community support to affected women.
• Increasing numbers of domestic violence, especially against women, as a result of lack of income.
• The impact of inflation and flotation policies on the poorest groups and their needs.
• Strategies for dealing with the psychological effects of economic crises.
Recommendations:
• Activating laws that protect women’s economic rights.
• Awareness programs targeting women and society about the danger of economic violence.
• Providing psychological support to women who suffer from the effects of economic violence.
This table aims to raise awareness of the issue of economic violence, and encourage community discussion about the necessity of supporting women and empowering them economically and psychologically to confront this phenomenon.
