Within the framework of strengthening cooperation between Egypt and Gabon, a joint statement came between the two countries following the meeting of Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, with Major General Brice Cleotier Olegy Nyigma, President of the Republic of Gabon, today, December 27, in the capital, Libreville. The statement stated: "At the kind invitation of Mr. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Major General Brice Cloeter Olégie Nygma, President of the Gabonese Republic, made a working and friendship visit to Cairo during the period from 28 to 30 November 2024.
During this visit, the two presidents held fruitful meetings during which they exchanged views on current international issues related to the development of the African continent, in addition to strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The statement added: “In this context, and under the guidance of the two presidents, Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Egyptian Affairs Abroad, visited Libreville on December 27, 2024, accompanied by a high-level delegation that included Dr. Khaled Al-Anani, the Egyptian candidate for the position of Director-General of UNESCO. The delegation expressed its pride in the distinguished fraternal relations, friendship and cooperation that unites Egypt and Gabon, stressing Egypt’s keenness to strengthen these relations, especially in the political, security, economic, commercial and development fields.

The two sides also stressed the importance of reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The discussions witnessed the two sides agreeing to coordinate their efforts in international organizations, especially in UNESCO. In light of the rich civilizational and cultural heritage of the two countries, and in this context, Gabon announced its support for the nomination of Dr. Khaled El-Anani for the position of Director-General of UNESCO 2025-2029, in recognition of the legitimate aspirations of the African continent within this organization. Egypt expressed its gratitude to the Gabonese Republic for its decision to withdraw its candidacy for the position of Director-General of UNESCO in support of the Egyptian candidate.
