Swifties Furious Over Taylor Swift’s Billboard Ranking

Swifties Furious Over Taylor Swift’s Billboard Ranking

Someone check on the Swifties because they are maaaadddd. What’s new? I’m just kidding, put the sequin-encrusted knives down. This week, US music outlet Billboard announced the top two greatest pop stars of the 21st century. Unfortunately for the Eras Tour Queen, Taylor Swift came in second to Beyoncé. However, that’s not why the Swifties are ready to wage war.

Billboard has been slowly drip-feeding audiences with their countdown of great popstars, starting with Katy Perry back in August who came in at number 25. The rankings are decided by the Billboard team and aren’t just about the charts and record sales. The rankings take into account the cultural impact the artist has had on society.

After a slow and steady countdown, we finally reached the top two which Billboard announced on X (formerly Twitter) with a video documenting the substantial impact she’s had on music over the last 25 years. However, in the original montage, eagle-eyed Swifties noticed that the publication had included a clip from Kanye West‘s video for his song “Famous” which included naked wax figures of a range of famous people including Swift.

The Tweet and embedded video was deleted after backlash and quickly replaced with a new one without the clip from “Famous”.

This moment was the catalyst for Swift’s longstanding beef with West and Kim Kardashian. At the time in 2016, she claimed West hadn’t asked her for permission to reference her in the song or use her likeness in the video. West disagreed, and later, Kardashian released a video on Snapchat which seemingly featured Swift consenting to the track. As a result, Swift’s reputation took a huge nosedive which inspired her to release Reputation.

Well, until 2020, when the entire phone call between Swift and West was leaked. It proved that West didn’t explicitly ask her about the line “I made that bitch famous”, as the leaked 2016 Snapchat implied.

It was a big ol’ mess!!!

So, with that being said, Swifties were not impressed by the inclusion of the clip from “Famous”. Many took to social media absolutely slamming the outlet for using the clip — especially after Swift had been so clear about her feelings towards it — demanding the publication publish an apology to the Midnights singer.

The hashtag #billboardIsOverParty also started circulating. Ouchie mama!!!!

West also received a spot on BIllboard’s list, landing in seventh place.

Last week, Hailey Beiber tweeted “Billboard is a fucking joke as per usual!” after her husband Justin Beiber received eighth place.

Tell ’em, Hailey!
