Emmental is the most consumed cheese in France. However, more and more brands are offering imported cheese. On the back of packages in a supermarket, a simple mention “EU”, noticed by a minority of consumers. “I didn’t know it, but it bothers me a little”recognizes a customer.
If the national brands of Emmental play the game, the distributor brands often offer lower prices. Brands like Carrefour and E.Leclerc are less careful about the origin of products. The president of Coopérative U, Dominique Schelcher, says he only sells French Emmental. “In times of inflation, there may be a risk of having imported products at lower prices. This is something that must be fought against”he said. Dairy farmers fear a drop in their income if imports increase.
