Arab Defense Website November 23, 2024: At the recently concluded IDEAS 2024 defense exhibition, Pakistan Air Force officials revealed details of their ambitious PFX (Pakistan Fighter Programme), a project aimed at developing an indigenous 4.5+ generation fighter aircraft. The program reflects Pakistan’s intention to enhance its air combat capabilities while reducing dependence on imported platforms.
The PFX will be a twin-engined fighter aircraft with advanced design features, including canard winglets for improved maneuverability and aerodynamic performance and will come with advanced sensors like infrared search and track (IRST) system and an indigenously developed AESA (Active Electronic Array) radar.
PAF officials claim that the PFX will exceed the capabilities of the JF-17, Pakistan’s current light combat aircraft jointly developed with China. While exact details remain scarce, PAF officials have indicated that the first prototype of the PFX fighter could take to the skies within the next four to five years. The timeline indicates that Pakistan is accelerating its efforts to achieve milestones in design, testing and production within the decade.
