The New Assiut Barrage Project is one of the largest national projects implemented by the state over the past years because of its great importance in improving irrigation in Upper Egypt governorates and providing hydroelectric energy. In these points we explain the importance of the project and the most important information about it:
- The project is the largest water project on the Nile River and was constructed at a total cost of 6.5 billion pounds over 6 years.
- The project was created to be a replacement for the old arches, more than 100 years after their construction, which were constructed in 1898.
- The project was established to establish projects that serve agriculture and irrigation in 5 governorates (Assiut, Minya, Beni Suef, Fayoum, and Giza) to serve 24 million citizens by improving irrigation in the Middle Egypt region, which is located behind the mouth of the Ibrahimiya Canal.
- The project serves an area of 1.65 million acres, 20% of the cultivated land area in Egypt.
- The project works to improve river navigation by constructing two first-class navigation locks
- Through these bridges, clean, environmentally friendly electrical energy is produced through a hydroelectric power station consisting of 4 giant turbines.
- Electricity is generated with a capacity of 32 megawatts and a voltage of 66 thousand watts, and the electricity resulting from the project is pumped into the unified electricity network.
- The project includes a new traffic axis by constructing a 70-ton bridge on top of the new bridges to connect the east and west of the Nile, with a width of 19 meters and consisting of 4 lanes and 2 pedestrian walkways.
-The project provides a control system based on the latest international systems to control dispositions and levels, and 4 berths for ships to serve Nile tourism, to put Assiut Governorate on the Nile tourism map.
- The project has 8 gates to the bridge, “the eastern and western spillways”, with a width of 17 meters per opening, and the weight of each gate is 80 tons.
