There’s no shame in turning to ChatGPT for a lil’ bit of help putting your resume together. However, if you’re going to rely on AI, make sure you give it a once over before you submit it or you might end up like the unlucky sod who had their resume roasted by business mogul Jane Lu.
Jane, who built her empire after founding the online fashion retailer Showpo before becoming a panellist on the Australian version of Shark Tank, took to TikTok on Thursday to share one of the worst resumes she’d ever received throughout her career.
“I think I’ve just received potentially the worst job application ever,” the 38-year-old said, before reading out snippets of a job application by some bloke called Benjamin.
“Hiring manager, I hope this finds you well. I am confident that my experience in [relevant experience/skill] positions me as a strong candidate.”
Can you spot the place where they fucked it? Yep, that’s right. They forgot to edit out the template prompt with their actual experiences. Rookie error, but we all make mistakes, don’t we?
Sadly for Benjamin, that wasn’t all. In another section, the application even included the prompt that the user must have given ChatGPT.
“Here is a more polished and articulate version of your cover letter,” Jane continued.
“It’s like ChatGPT copy and paste. All they changed was their name. They’ve copied and pasted this thing that is half-filled.
“I love ChatGPT but you’ve gotta use a little bit of this,” she said, giving her noggin’ a tap.
So true, queen.
Here’s the thing — ChatGPT is an amazing, great tool you can use to your advantage to help you format your resume and cover letter in a polished way. However, you can’t expect it to do all the work.
In this case, old mate Benjamin should have obviously given his resume a read-through and filled it out with his specific experience. To make it even stronger, he could have researched the job listing to find the name of the hiring manager too.
I think it’s safe to say he didn’t get the gig this time around but hopefully, it can be a learning experience!
