First things first: calories are not bad. We need them to function. Problems can arise, however, when we consume more calories than we need. Which, alas, is super easy to do when sitting in front of a computer for hours is a reality of daily life. But there are some easy ways we can add more movement to our days, thus increasing our daily burn and promoting a healthier metabolism. A few of our favorite tips, below.
More non-exercise activity thermogenesis
Sometimes the simplest tricks are best. Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) refers to the energy we spend doing things that aren’t eating, sleeping, or exercise. Personal trainer Amanda Lee, says to try pacing—or even just standing—when we’re on the phone, texting, or sending emails. “Moving more = burning more. Period,” she says.
In a similar spirit, our wellness editor uses an active chair while she’s working. It’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a chair that allows you to move and rock while you sit in it.
Spice up your life
“Add cayenne pepper to your food,” Amanda says. “The spice boosts metabolism and curbs appetite at the same time.”
Get caffeinated
Studies have shown that caffeine can help increase the amount of calories we burn while at rest. Ofc, the caffeine doesn’t have to be from coffee—matcha and other caffeinated teas are also good to sip on.
Watch a scary movie
Spooky season is nigh, after all. “Getting scared raises your heart rate and stimulates adrenaline, leading to an easy calorie burn,” Amanda says. Woohoo, more compelling evidence to cancel the Friday night plans we already regret making.
Get off
Break out that vibrator, baby, because studies estimate that an orgasm can burn between 60 and 100 calories. Don’t mind if we do.
