Swailem: OMVS is a successful cooperative model between riparian countries

Dr. Hani Sweilem, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, met with Sheikh Tidiane Daeye, Minister of Water and Sanitation of the Republic of Senegal, as part of the activities of the second day of the 7th Cairo Water Week and the 9th African Water Week.

Sweilem indicated that the Republic of Senegal is a partner. He will be a key role for Egypt in the field of water, stressing the importance of renewing the memorandum of cooperation signed between the two countries as a framework for continued cooperation.

Suwailem praised the successful cooperative model between the countries riparian to the Senegal River, represented by the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River Basin (OMVS), noting the success. At the COP27 conference, which was held in November 2022, water was placed at the top of the climate action agenda. After that, Egypt actively participated in the United Nations Water Conference in March 2023, where Egypt and Japan chaired the third interactive dialogue on water and climate. Egypt also led the African track during The activities of the Tenth World Water Forum, which was held in Bali, Indonesia, in May 2024, and we must continue this success in continuing to push water at the top of the global climate action agenda, and Egypt’s readiness to provide all forms of support to Senegal and the United Arab Emirates in organizing the upcoming United Nations conference in 2026.

Suwailem also reviewed Egypt’s efforts made during its current presidency of the Council of African Ministers of Water (AMCO) to serve our African brothers, and Egypt’s keenness to achieve constructive cooperation between all African countries
