The Prime Minister and the Bavarian Prime Minister witness the signing of a joint declaration of intent between the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and the government of the German state of Bavaria
Today, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister, and Markus Söder, Prime Minister of the German state of Bavaria, witnessed, at the government headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, the signing ceremony of a joint declaration of intent between the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and the government of the German state of Bavaria, regarding enhancing bilateral cooperation in The field of hydrogen.
The joint declaration of intent was signed by Engineer Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, and Florian Herrmann, Minister of State of the State of Bavaria in the Federal Republic of Germany.
On the sidelines of the signing, the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy said that the signing of the joint declaration of intent comes in light of Egypt’s adoption of an integrated national strategy for producing low-carbon hydrogen as a promising source of energy in the near future, and within the framework of the partnership.
Engineer Mahmoud Esmat added: The joint declaration includes cooperation and exchange on hydrogen trade issues, including identifying production capabilities and stages of expansion of hydrogen logistical paths, hydrogen technologies and market development, and research and development in various projects related to hydrogen production chains. And the use of renewable energies to produce green hydrogen. Through the chambers of commerce of both parties, industrial federations and business organizations with a focus on hydrogen producers in Egypt and hydrogen production technology providers in the state of Bavaria, as well as potential buyers of hydrogen in the German state.
He explained " “Ismat” The joint declaration of intent aims to explore and enhance opportunities for exchange and joint development between companies and relevant partners as part of foreign trade policy and to support scientific cooperation between Egyptian and Bavarian research institutions, provided that the two parties establish a working group for coordination and prepare proposals to implement this joint declaration, and conduct dialogues and hold coordinated meetings. With relevant partners, with the aim of setting priorities and exploring ways to achieve the results of this announcement.
The Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy continued: The Bavarian state office at the German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Cairo will be responsible for coordinating The working group, and the Egyptian and German sides will review this announcement on a regular basis to ensure its effectiveness, with the first review taking place before the end of this year.
Engineer Mahmoud Esmat confirmed that there is great interest from the public. The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy encourages the green hydrogen economy, as many measures have been taken to develop hydrogen in Egypt, and in September 2023, the Prime Minister’s decision was issued to establish the National Council for Green Hydrogen and its Derivatives, which aims to unify the state’s efforts to stimulate investment in this field, and ensure its competitiveness at levels. International and regionally, the Supreme Council of Energy approved, in February 2024, the national strategy for low-carbon hydrogen to be in line with national goals for Egypt to become one of the world’s leading countries in the low-carbon hydrogen economy.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy referred to the ambitious plans for the hydrogen sector, which aim to reach approximately 5 to 8% of the global tradable market by 2040, explaining that a law has been issued regarding incentives for green hydrogen production projects. And its derivatives and the controls for granting these incentives, which will contribute significantly to encouraging the private sector to participate effectively in green hydrogen projects in the Egyptian market.
Engineer Mahmoud Esmat added that Egypt is interested in encouraging the green hydrogen economy and adopting an integrated national strategy for producing low-carbon hydrogen as a promising source of energy within the framework of implementing the national strategy for integrated and sustainable energy, which It aims to reach the percentage of renewable energy to 42% of the total energy generated by 2030, pointing at the same time to the ongoing efforts in the field of green hydrogen through cooperation with development partners and innovative financing. This will enhance the transformation into a regional center for clean energy.
