The Dazed editorial team was emotional this morning, with one writer brought almost to tears, thanks to the new campaign for Tom Ford Beauty featuring Angelina Jolie. Made up with a glossy red lip and subtle smokey eye, Jolie looks radiant, strong, and, most importantly, like she’s thriving – a welcome sight for all fans of the actress and humanitarian icon.
Jolie is the first-ever celebrity spokesperson for Tom Ford Beauty, and has been tapped by the brand to be the face for the new Runway Lip Colour collection of lipsticks which rolls out in September. The range will replace its existing Lip Colour franchise and features 18 shades altogether, with eight of them new. There will also be eight shades of lip liners available. The campaign, which was shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and will be released in full on September 3, is a cinematic homage to feminine beauty and its power.
In the campaign, Jolie wears the collection’s hero shade, ‘Scarlet Rouge’, which she described to WWD as a beautiful colour and texture. “A good red lip needs little else. It’s worn with intention. That was part of the discussion.”
Jolie is one of the all-time beauty muses and OG blueprints for today’s internet It-girl aesthetic. From the spikey pixie cut in the 90s, to the gothic make-up of the early 00s, to the bombshell glam at the height of her Hollywood fame, Jolie has experimented with a wide range of styles. Last year, in an interview with Vogue, she spoke about how she’s been in the process of rediscovering herself and femininity over the last few years.
“After I went through something where I was hurt, I had a therapist ask if I would try wearing a flowing garment. Sounds silly, but I assumed that pants and boots projected a ‘tougher’ look, a stronger me. But was I strong enough to be soft? At the time, no. I felt vulnerable,” she says. “Now I wonder if I don’t know what my style is because I’m still understanding who I am at 48. I guess I’m in transition as a person.”
