The People’s Choice Country Awards, first held in 2023, will return for a second edition on NBC in September, with a list of nominees announced Thursday that includes some of the biggest names crossing over between country and the pop mainstream, including Beyoncé, Shaboozey, Zach Bryan, Kacey Musgraves, Morgan Wallen and Jelly Roll.
Bryan led the nominations with 19, followed by Beyoncé with 17 and Musgraves with 15. Notably, none of those three artists had a huge year at country radio, despite their outsized presences as mass-media superstars. That may be one way in which this awards show is looking to distinguish itself from two of its most obvious competitors, the country-music-industry-voted CMA Awards and ACM Awards.
The fan-voted awards show will be telecast on NBC and Peacock on Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, with Shania Twain hosting.
Shaboozey, the newcomer whose “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” has dominated the Billboard Hot 100 in the last couple of months, has 12 nominations.
Nominated for the top award, the People’s Artist of 2024, are Beyoncé, Jelly Roll, Kacey Musgraves, Kane Brown, Lainey Wilson, Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen and Zach Bryan.
But for artists who didn’t make it into that category, there are also separate divisions for top male and female artist as well as duo/group artist, as the People’s Choice Country Awards are big on gender-segregated categories as well as divisions in which all genders compete.
For this second year, the list of categories was expanded from 12 to 18, adding Female Song, Male Song, Group/Duo Song, Cover Song, New Artist Song and Storyteller Song of 2024.
The People’s Choice Country Awards entered a crowded field of country awards shows last year with an inaugural edition that was hosted by Little Big Town. It is NBC’s footprint in the field, while ABC has the CMA Awards in November and CBS began airing the CMT Awards last year, even as the ACM Awards, formerly on CBS, became an Amazon Prime exclusive.
The show is an offshoot of the long-running People’s Choice Awards show, which last aired in February on NBC.
The CMA Awards will be next up on the country calendar, with a date yet to be set for November.
