Dan McStay will be sidelined for six-eight weeks after scans confirmed the Collingwood forward had suffered a “moderate” medial collateral ligament injury in the Anzac Day victory over Essendon.
After the victory achieved in wet conditions at the MCG, the Magpies were expecting a diagnosis of an MCL strain rather than a more severe ACL injury.
But it’s still a blow for Collingwood and McStay, a valuable forward who missed the club’s 2023 premiership with a knee injury.

“Unfortunately, scans confirmed this morning that Dan has sustained a moderate grade MCL injury during yesterday’s Anzac Day match against Essendon. The injury is expected to see him out of the game for the next six to eight weeks,” said Collingwood’s general manager of football Charlie Gardiner in a statement.
“This is obviously a disappointing setback for Dan who has been in good form and has played a really important role for the team so far this season.”
McStay missed the Pies’ premiership two years ago after tearing his ACL in the preliminary finals.
On Friday, McStay left the field in the third quarter after a marking contest in Collingwood’s goal square where he lost his footing. He emerged holding his left knee then hobbled off to the bench and was subbed out minutes later.
