Netflix’s latest TV show The Residence has already risen to number two on the Australian Top 10, but there’s a detail that has caught the eye of some viewers. At the end of the final episode, there’s a dedication to Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andre Braugher.
The star passed away in December 2023 after suffering from lung cancer. At the time of his death, he was halfway through filming The Residence alongside Uzo Aduba, Randall Park, Ken Marino and others.
The Shonda Rhimes-produced show is a screwball whodunnit set in the White House, revolving around the murder of A.B Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito), the White House Chief Usher. Aduba plays Cordelia Cupp, the world’s best detective, who sets out to find out who killed the staff member. Seeing as the White House was hosting a State Dinner at the time of his death, there are 157 possible suspects.
Braugher originally played the role of A.B Wynter, so the show had a special card at the end which reads: “In Memory of Andre Braugher”.
Creator Paul William Davies told Deadline he chose to have the dedication to the Emmy-award winner appear after the final episode for a reason.
“There might have been a natural inclination to do that after the first episode, but for me, it was important to do that at the end of the whole series, to say, you were part of all this, and we have not forgotten you,” Davies said.
“It was devastating, personally to me, and to so many other people on the show, some of whom had worked with him on other projects and knew him really well, and some people who got to know him like I did through this, but became quite close to him.
“He was a lovely, very grounded, very decent and wonderful human being, and, of course, an incredible actor.”
Esposito, who was recast in Braugher’s role, told Shondaland it was a “difficult decision” to step in, but he was “proud and honoured”.
“To be afforded the opportunity to create in his honour with this incredible team extends the depth and breadth of his legacy through all of us who loved him so dearly,” he said.
