NFL star Joey Bosa agrees deal with Buffalo Bills after brutal LA Chargers release

Former Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa is set to join the Buffalo Bills after being ruthlessly cut in Los Angeles.

According to multiple reports, Bosa, 29, has agreed a one-year, $12.6million deal with the Bills following his brutal Chargers release last week.

The team controversially announced they were cutting ties with their longest-tenured player in franchise history despite the fact he was selected for his fifth Pro Bowl this past season.

LA selected Bosa with the third pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. As a Charger, he tallied 72 career sacks, which ranks second behind Leslie O’Neal (105.5) in franchise history.

He was crowned the Rookie of the Year in 2016 after posting 10.5 sacks and 17 tackles per loss and emerged as one of the NFL’s best edge rushers. As a result, Bosa made four Pro Bowls in his first six seasons in the league.

The Chargers rewarded him with a five-year, $135m extension in 2020. At that time, the deal was the richest for a defensive player in NFL history.

Unfortunately, injuries plagued him since which caused him to play just five games in 2022 and nine the year after.

Bosa previously expressed wanting to be a Charger for life and took a pay cut last season to remain in the City of Angels. However, he was still projected to have a $36.5m cap in 2025.

The Chargers freed up $90.6m in cap space after making the cut-throat decision to part company with him at the end of his ninth season.

Although it was never his intention to leave LA, Bosa had previously discussed joining brother Nick, a five-time Pro Bowl edge rusher, in San Francisco with the 49ers.

‘It’d be cool at some point,’ he said. ‘I always thought of myself being somebody that will play here and retire here, which I think not many people do on one team, and I think it would be a cool thing to accomplish, but you never know.’

Mother Cheryl was also keen for Joey to join his brother in San Francisco after reposting a video on her Instagram story captioned: ‘Can we get a petition going on bringing @jjbigbear to the bay.’

However, Joey is now headed for Buffalo after striking a one-year deal with last season’s AFC Championship runner-up.

The Bills topped the AFC East after amassing a 13-4 record in 2024, only to be denied a Super Bowl appearance by the Kansas City Chiefs for the second straight year.
