The Shrek 5 First Look Just Dropped & Fans Aren’t Happy

Hey, all stars, guess what? Another — yes, another — Shrek 5 movie is on the way, and it’s already getting absolutely roasted by punters online.

On Friday, Universal Pictures released a cast announcement for the fifth installment of the beloved film series Shrek, 15 years after the last installment.

Not only did it bring back beloved voice actors Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy, it also revealed that the one and only Zendaya would be joining the cast as Shrek’s teenage daughter, Felicia.

Don’t believe me? You can check it out below.

In the clip, Shrek, Donkey, Fiona and Felicia are scrolling through Shrek memes on the magic mirror. Suddenly, Felicia becomes incredibly embarrassed to see her dad’s thirst traps on the feed.

Yes, I’m talking about these iconic yet chronically online images.

While we know Zendaya is voicing Felicia, we don’t know who will be jumping on board to voice the other two triplets, Fergus and Farkle.

To be totally frank, I am a Shrek fan. An apologist, if you will, so when I saw the cast announcement, I was not a negative nelly like the nay-sayers. I was excited, and I continue to be.

However, many people online are slamming the clip for the changes in animation style.

Again, as a Shrek apologist, I feel like the haters are not taking into account that we were first introduced to the green, onion-loving big dawg 25 years ago. He’s aged! Do you think they have Botox and Rejuvederm facials in the swamp? I fkn doubt it. Give the man a break, for god’s sake.

Also, it’s worth noting that animation has changed a little bit since the last installment 15 years ago. We’ve seen Dreamworks tighten up their offerings and mix up the vibe before, too. Just look at the entire Puss In Boots’ franchise!

On a more technical note, according to Forbes, Shrek 5 is using a new-ish animation engine called Moon Ray — the same one they used for Puss In Boots: The Last Wish in 2022.

Whether you love it or hate it, we’ve got a little bit of time before Shrek 5 hits cinemas around Christmas in 2026. See you in a year and a bit!!!
