Top plastic surgeon weighs in on Will Smith’s ‘puffy’, ‘stiff’ face after inappropriate dancing controversy

A top plastic surgeon has weighed in on Will Smith’s ‘puffy’ and ‘stiff’ face, following his controversy at an awards show in Miami.

The Oscar winner, 56, was filmed putting on a flirty display with India Martinez, 39, as they performed at the Premio Lo Nuestro award show on February 20.

While the duo’s steamy chemistry was a talking point, Smith’s inflated face also set tongues wagging.

While some experts have blamed it on weight gain, New York-based cosmetic dermatologist Dr Michele Green told DailyMail.com she suspects the actor has had dermal fillers to ‘fight aging skin and appear more youthful’ but he could have gone overboard.

She explains: ‘Dermal fillers are often used to replace lost volume. As we age, the structural support proteins in the skin deplete, leading to a hollow, gaunt appearance.

‘Dermal fillers can restore volume to these areas, creating a more youthful appearance.

‘However, if too much filler is used, the individual will appear “over-filled” and puffy. It is possible that Will Smith received too much dermal fillers.’

With Smith’s recent bloated look, some commenters have also suggested it could be down to weight gain

The most popular dermal filler brands are Juvederm, Restylane, and Sculptra.

This is because they are made using hyaluronic acid, which is a natural component of the skin, and experts say the results look more natural.

These fillers – which cost between $700 and $900 per syringe depending on the provider and location – help to plump the skin and they can also be used to contour the face when applied to areas such as the jaw, chin and cheeks.

Dr Green says Smith’s breakup from wife Jada, which was revealed in 2023, may have inspired him to get cosmetic work done. It has previously been suggested she got cheek implants or filler for a more chiseled look.

But Dr Green adds more men than ever are seeking out cosmetic procedures on their own, so maybe Smith was looking for something to ‘plump the skin and even out the skin texture’.

She explains: ‘With the rise of social media, more and more people – men as well as women – are becoming cognizant of their appearances and wish to make improvements.

‘Many of these individuals will turn to non-invasive cosmetic procedures to subtly improve their appearance with minimal downtime.

‘There is a professional advantage to appearing younger, especially for actors who are often on stage or in front of a camera.’

DailyMail.com has reached out to Smith’s team and is awaiting comment.

If Smith’s puffy complexion is due to the overuse of fillers, Dr Green says there is an ‘easy fix’.

Hyaluronidase, which is a naturally occurring enzyme, can be used to dissolve fillers.

The hyaluronidase is injected into the areas with filler, and it breaks down the hyaluronic acid, which is then removed by the body.

‘The effects of hyaluronidase are usually apparent after just 48 hours,’ Dr Green says.

Not all fillers are dissolvable though.

While Juvederm and Restylane can be broken down using hyaluronidase, brands such as Sculptra and Radiesse cannot, and surgical intervention might be needed if the filler needs removing.

It isn’t the first time Smith has sparked conversation over potential aesthetic procedures.

In November 2021, viewers were left baffled by his smooth complexion during his appearance on the UK’s One Show via video link to promote his new film King Richard.

One commentator suggested the then 53-year-old looked the same as he did when he debuted on NBC TV series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, while another described his appearance as ‘robotic’.

With Smith’s recent bloated look, some commenters have also suggested it could be down to weight gain.

At one point when he took his suit jacket off on stage, his white T-shirt could be seen clinging to his belly.

Over recent years Smith has been public about his weight struggles and he even posted a photo to Instagram showing his ‘dad bod’ in May 2021. He said he weighed 225lbs at his heaviest.

He previously shared his time at home in the early days of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic led to more eating than usual.

Coupled with a more sedentary lifestyle than usual, it made him put on weight.
