Stranger’s appalling act after family’s car was involved in a hit and run accident: ‘This is disgusting’

A driver was left stunned after finding a note taped to her car following a hit-and-run – only to discover that the so-called ‘helpful’ witness had an ulterior motive.

The woman returned to her dented vehicle to find the message from an anonymous onlooker, claiming they had seen another car smash into the front before fleeing the scene.

The anonymous local claimed they had followed the offending vehicle and taken photos of the licence plate – but would only send the details in exchange for money.

‘We followed the car and got pictures of the licence plate, but we do require an award for it. Sorry but these are hard times,’ the note read.

‘I hope you understand. Sincerely, trying to help you.’

Outraged social media users were quick to slam the audacious demand, with many calling it outright extortion.

‘That is all sorts of illegal. They made that easy by leaving evidence for you,’ one said.

Another added, ‘Hand that over to the investigators and see what happens.’

Others suggested the witness was either complicit in the accident or looking to scam the victim.

‘They’re probably the ones who hit you,’ one speculated.

In Australia, withholding critical information about a crime in exchange for money could amount to extortion, which is a serious criminal offence.

It is recommended that all victims of hit-and-runs or similar incidents immediately report it to the police and hand over any notes or communications they receive.

It’s not the first anonymous note to cause outrage of late, with neighbours in an expensive Sydney suburb left stunned after discovering an ‘unhinged’ note placed on a car’s windshield.

The cruel note was printed out on white paper in capital letters and read: ‘Thank you for letting me know which kind of person you would have been during Nazi Germany or USSR.

‘It’s always good to know your neighbours. Have a great day.’

A few believe the note was a response to being asked to move their car.

‘We live along [the street] and have had a note placed on a parked car by someone threatening to report it to the police because it doesn’t get used to moved much. My guess is… this is their response.’

Many were shocked by the brutal tone and unnecessary comparison.

‘That’s the world we live in… as soon as you do something disagreeable in someone’s eyes – you’re automatically labelled something sinister and awful,’ a woman wrote.

‘This is truly unhinged,’ another said.

A third added, ‘That’s horrendous – it says more about the person who wrote the note than the owner of the car.’

‘I hope whoever wrote this is embarrassed. No words, what a lunatic,’ a man wrote.

One man encouraged the community to think on the bright side.

‘Maybe the subject of this note is the opposite of what everyone is thinking? Don’t always think the worst, as the note doesn’t actually state it.’ he said.

A few others asked people to be more compassionate.

‘I feel like the person who wrote it needs a hug – they must be having a tough time,’ one said.

‘Sounds like someone with some serious issues,’ another wrote.
