Harry Kane tipped to make shock Arsenal move by Gunners legend Paul Merson after former Tottenham striker’s release clause is revealed
Harry Kane could make a sensational move to Arsenal in the coming years, according to former Gunners midfielder Paul Merson.
Kane spent his entire career at arch-rivals Tottenham before making a big money move to Bayern Munich in August 2023.
Kane joined the Bundesliga club in a deal that could eventually be worth £120million but it has now emerged that there is a buy-out stipulation in the striker’s contract that he can activate.
Reports in Germany claim that the clause could have been activated during the most recent winter transfer window for a fee of £67m, with the price set to drop to £54million next January.
And speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said he wouldn’t be surprised to see Arsenal make a move with his old club still in desperate need of a top No 9.
‘Arsenal will buy him,’ he said. When asked whether he was serious, he added: ‘Why not? £64m, why not? Sol Campbell did [make the move]. People will go “Oh he’s this age and that age” but Arsenal need now.

Paul Merson says he can see Arsenal making a move for the former Tottenham man
Kane is Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer, but Merson thinks he could still join Arsenal
‘If Arsenal haven’t won the League, you’ve got to take a chance. You’ve got to take a chance, buy someone that’s proven.
‘I wouldn’t be surprised, and when you’re Harry Kane and you’ve been told you can go for £64m, there’s only a couple of teams who could buy him.
‘Maybe Tottenham will buy him back but he’ll have to win something at Bayern Munich to go back to Tottenham. If you’ve not won anything at Bayern Munich, you’re not going back to Tottenham to win nothing.’
Mail Sport, however, understands that Kane is currently very happy in Germany and has no intention to activate the clause any time soon.
When he left Spurs for the Allianz Arena, it is understood Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy negotiated first refusal as part of the agreement with Bayern.
That clause can only be activated in the event of Bayern agreeing to sell Kane and the striker giving the green light to returning to Spurs, a club where he is idolised after becoming their all-time highest scorer.
Even then, there is no fixed fee in Tottenham’s first-option stipulation, meaning the club would still have to negotiate a price with Bayern before exercising the option.
Kane, who scored 213 Premier League goals, left Spurs in the hope of finally winning trophies but failed to do so in his first campaign with Bayern.
He has had no problems in front of goal, though, scoring 70 times in 72 appearances, and his side currently sit six points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.
