Newcastle legend Alan Shearer calls out Ian Wright after Alexander Isak display against Arsenal in Carabao Cup semi-final triumph

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has called out Ian Wright after Alexander Isak played a starring role in the Magpies’ Carabao Cup semi-final triumph over Arsenal.

Isak, who has repeatedly been linked with the Gunners in recent months, impressed against the visitors’ defensive duo of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba.

The Swedish striker appeared to have given Newcastle a fourth-minute lead on the night with a fine finish, only to have been ruled offside.

Isak then played a vital role in Newcastle’s eventual opener, which added to their 2-0 aggregate lead.

The forward saw a 19th minute strike the Arsenal post to be swept in by Jacob Murphy on the rebound.

Isak, who had scored in the first leg, continued to play a crucial role as Eddie Howe’s side eased into next month’s final with Anthony Gordon scoring their second on the night and fourth on aggregate.

Newcastle’s record goalscorer Shearer lauded Isak’s display against Arsenal’s much praised defensive partnership of Gabriel and Saliba.

Shearer took the opportunity to taunt former Arsenal star Wright in a post on social media.

‘Hey @IanWright0 talk to me about our boy Isak against your 2 centre backs!!! #NEWARS,’ Shearer posted.

He added: ‘That was a proper performance man. Arsenal couldn’t live with the intensity. 

‘Better than them tonight in every position.’

It is the second time in three seasons the Magpies have reached the final of this competition after being beaten by Manchester United in 2023.

Eddie Howe’s side will target a first major domestic trophy in 70 years next month.

Newcastle will now face either Liverpool or Tottenham in the final at Wembley on March 16.

The two sides play their second leg on Thursday at Anfield, with Spurs one goal up from the first leg.
