Hold onto your crucifixes and wooden stakes because a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is officially in the works. It’s the news we’ve all been secretly (or not so secretly) hoping for since the show ended in 2003, and it’s coming with some serious star power attached.
It’s described as “the next chapter in the Buffyverse” according to The Hollywood Reporter, which means we’re in for something completely fresh and we are so on!
Who’s coming back for the Biffy The Vampire Slayer ?
The biggest news? Sarah Michelle Gellar is attached to the project, but not in the way you’d think. Gellar won’t be front and centre as Sunnydale’s favourite slayer. Instead, she’s taking on an executive producer role, passing the stake to a new, younger slayer. However, Variety reported that Gellar will have a “reoccuring role”, so fingers crossed we’ll get her on our screens.
Gellar’s involvement comes after years of saying “absolutely not” to a Buffy revival. But it seems the success of other reboots has changed her tune. As she told The Drew Barrymore Show in December 2024: “I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble, and it’s so perfect… But watching Sex and The City [sequel And Just Like That] and seeing Dexter, and realising there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe’.”
Since then, multiple sources have reported that Hulu is “nearing a pilot order” of the show.
Behind the scenes, we’ve got some serious talent lined up. Deadline reported that Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, known for Nomadland and Eternals, is set to direct.
“[Buffy] was everything for me for a few years in college,” Zhao told Google in a 2022 interview.
“Vampires, witchcraft, teen romance, I mean what else do you want?” Period!
The writing duo of Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, the brains behind Poker Face and Fringe, are penning the script. And to add to the iconic-ness of all of this, Dolly Parton is finally getting an executive producer credit via her Sandollar production company.
One name noticeably absent from all this excitement? Joss Whedon. The original series creator is not involved in the Hulu show, which, given recent controversies, is not surprising.
What is the plot of the Buffy reboot?
While plot details are being guarded more closely than the Hellmouth, we do know a few things. The reboot will dig into lore established in the original series’ finale, which unleashed “hundreds of potential slayers” worldwide. Multiple sources say the new Buffy would focus on a younger slayer, with Gellar’s Buffy Summers “not being the central character”.
While Buffy’s legacy will undoubtedly loom large, this is very much a story about a new Chosen One.
Do we have a release date for the Buffy reboot?
Hulu has been keeping very quiet on the show, so we don’t have a release date yet. But here’s what we do know: a writers’ room is being assembled, which signals confidence in a full series order.
While no official release window exists yet, Deadline reported that negotiations accelerated after Gellar’s December interview promoting Dexter: Original Sin. Translation: this train’s leaving Sunnydale Station ASAP.
So there you have it! The Buffyverse is back, and I’m sure slaying will be involved.
