The Ministry of Environment launches a major campaign in Hurghada to plant 2,000 evergreen trees that can tolerate lack of water

The Ministry of Environment, through the “Green Hurghada” project, launched a major campaign to plant 2,000 evergreen trees of the types Acacia galuga and Kaya, or “mahogany” In the city of Hurghada as the first event of the project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), as partners in its implementation to emphasize the importance of protecting the environment and increasing green spaces to build a sustainable green future in Hurghada, in the presence of Hoda Al-Shawadfi, Assistant Minister of the Environment. For Ecotourism Affairs, Dr. Magda Hanna, Deputy Governor of the Red Sea, Dr. Mahfouz Abdel Sattar, President of Hurghada University, Yoshinari Suzuki, UNIDO Industrial Development Officer, Dr. Yousriya Hamed, Director of the Green Hurghada Project, and a number of relevant leaders in the Ministry and the Governorate, within the framework of the celebrations of National Environment Day 2025.

 

The Minister of Environment, Dr. Yasmine Fouad said that the campaign includes planting 1,000 trees in the vicinity of Hurghada University and planting 1,000 others in various places in the city… noting that these trees have a distinctive and picturesque aesthetic appearance. It is characterized by being evergreen and able to adapt to the effects of climate change, as it tolerates salinity, lack of water, drought and high temperatures, and it also blooms in the following year of its cultivation. 

 

It also Hoda Al-Shawadfi, Assistant Minister for Ecotourism, visited the first environmentally friendly boat in Hurghada, where its operating mechanism relies entirely on electrical energy, which contributes to reducing the effects of climate change and the negative effects of traditional boats, which It uses diesel as its fuel and other materials that may cause environmental damage in the event of accidents or leaks, so that electric boats are an example of introducing environmentally friendly technologies in this sector to protect the marine environment and biodiversity in the city of Hurghada, stressing the aspiration of Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of the Environment, to study the best ways to generalize the experience in cooperation. With the tourism and marine investment sector as a pioneering experience in Egypt in tourist cities and natural reserves.

 

Dr. Yousriya pointed out Hamed, Director of the Green Hurghada Project, pointed out that the Green Hurghada Project represents a new addition to the record of successes of the Ministry of Environment and the efforts of the Minister of Environment to support the protection of natural resources and reserves, and to enhance environmental sustainability, with the aim of creating an environment conducive to environmental and climate investment, and raising the level of eco-tourism in the city of Hurghada as a role model and destination. A pioneering tourist adopts an environmentally friendly approach by working on three basic pillars: developing a strategic framework for environmental policies that integrates sustainability into development planning and environmental investments, in addition to enhancing investments in technology. Green, especially in the tourism sector, to reduce emissions and improve the efficiency of resource use in addition to ensuring the sustainability of environmental projects, by raising environmental awareness, strengthening institutional capabilities, and encouraging environmentally friendly practices.

 

< p>It is worth noting that National Environment Day, which falls on January 27 of each year, commemorates the issuance of the first environmental protection law in Egypt (Law No. 4 of 1994), which represents a turning point in national efforts to protect the environment, by establishing a clear legislative framework to preserve Natural resources and enhancement The role of various parties in preserving the environment.
