Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane weather: Millions of rain-weary Aussies brace for more wild weather this weekend – but it’s good news for tennis fans

Millions on the east coast are hunkering down for a weekend of wild weather but it’s good news for tennis fans heading to the Australian Open.

Sydney was still being lashed with rain on Friday morning after a week of wild storms and downpours, with the chance of showers increasing in the afternoon and evening.

More showers are forecast for the Harbour City on Saturday before skies are expected to clear on Sunday with temperatures reaching just 23C.

Damaging winds were also possible along the NSW coastline with gusts of up to 55km/hour to 65km/hour expected on Friday.

Brisbane is also bracing for a wet weekend with the chance of a thunderstorm on Friday and showers on through the weekend before the sun returns on Monday.

It’s a different story for Melbourne, however, with showers expected to clear on Friday and the mercury to soar past 30C on Saturday and Sunday.

Elsewhere in the country, Darwin will receive a weekend of rain with possible storms, while Canberra, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart will stay relatively dry.

It comes after severe thunderstorms smashed Australia’s east coast this week.

Damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall smashed not only Sydney but also the Hunter, the Mid North Coast, Illawarra, Central Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains and Northern Tablelands districts.

One man in the NSW Central West town of Cowra was killed when a tree fell on his vehicle and more than 200,000 homes across Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong were left without power on Wednesday due to lightning strikes.

Up to 73,700 strikes detected within 100km of the CBD on Wednesday, according to Weatherzone. A total of 1.8million lightning strikes were detected in an arc from Queensland to Tasmania across 24 hours.
