Fans destroy college basketball coach as pre-game dig at opponent backfires in disastrous fashion
Before he took over as the head coach of the basketball team of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Doug Gottlieb made his living as a college basketball analyst – making appearances on national television and radio.
His first season coaching has not gone to plan as, going into Wednesday, the Green Bay Phoenix were 2-10 before facing off against Division II Michigan Tech.
Gottlieb didn’t do himself any favors prior to the matchup, telling reporters at a press conference that there’s a method to scheduling games against Division II opponents: ‘Part of the reason I want to play better teams is… it’s two degrees outside, snowing, you know, I don’t really like the idea of “Nobody U” coming in here… I always thought, “what do we learn, playing a game where we win by 20” but there’s a methodology to it.’
Well, ‘Nobody U’ came out on top. In a hot serving of hubris, Michigan Tech knocked off Wisconsin-Green Bay 72-70 on Wednesday afternoon – causing social media to laugh at Gottlieb for poking the bear.
What’s more is that – for some bizarre reason – Gottlieb still does his daily national radio show/podcast in addition to serving as a coach.
Well, his show was supposed to go to air about an hour after the game and when fans of the sport tuned in to hear what Gottlieb had to say, they were met with a substitute host instead.
Green Bay college basketball coach Doug Gottlieb lost to a school he called ‘Nobody U’
Gottlieb then skipped out on his nationally broadcast radio show – with a substitute stepping in
Social media started dunking on Gottlieb, laughing at his embarrassing defeat.
Adam Hobson, a player on Michigan Tech’s basketball team, tweeted, ‘Merry Christmas from Nobody U!’
CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein tweeted out, ‘Green Bay loses a buy game to Michigan Tech. The epitome of brutality,’ referring to the fact that Green Bay likely paid Michigan Tech to play against them.
College basketball content creator Cole Adams tweeted out the final score along with a picture of ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
That’s in reference to a Twitter spat that Schefter and Gottlieb got into earlier this week, after Gottlieb openly questioned the NFL insider’s reporting about the NIL warchest at another school, Sacramento State.
Schefter brutally roasted his counterpart saying, ‘Jeezus, Doug. A seven-game losing streak and last place in the Horizon League? Less time on social media and more time in the gym.’
Another user, going by the handle @CurryHicksSage, tweeted, ‘Everyone’s understandably dunking on Gottlieb but it’s the [athletic director] who deserves the criticism here. He was the one who thought hiring a talk show host with no college coaching experience and letting him keep the talk show were good ideas.’
Barstool Sports’ John Rich tweeted, ‘Doug Gottlieb is like a Looney Tunes character who steps on a rake every time he leaves his house.’
College basketball fans began trolling Gottlieb after his loss in humiliating fashion
Gottlieb then bizarrely responded, saying he wasn’t critical of any teams on his schedule – but did so while quote tweeting a video of him sounding critical of a team on his schedule
After getting repeatedly trolled online, Gottlieb decided to respond – but did so in an extremely contradictory fashion.
He quote tweeted the video of the pre-game press conference – but bizarrely claimed, ‘Done with this crap. We scheduled up. Including Michigan Tech. No where ever, have I been critical of anyone on our schedule,’ despite the fact that he quote tweeted the video of him being critical about D-II schools.
Gottlieb also addressed the reason for his absence on his radio show, telling FrontOfficeSports, ‘I had a game at 11. The games are two hours long. I start taping my pod at 1 every day. Live at 2. There was no time to do it.’
According to college basketball analytics site KenPom, Green Bay ranks 329th out of 364 teams nationally in the metrics. The site also projects them to only win two more games this season – both at home.
Green Bay is now 2-11 and on an eight-game losing streak. They’re dead last in the Horizon League, with an 0-3 record.
In college, Gottlieb played basketball on a scholarship at the University of Notre Dame – before he lost the free ride to school after he stole a classmate’s credit card and used it for fraudulent purchases.
He then played at Golden West College and then Oklahoma State before turning pro with brief stints overseas.
