Next US President Donald Trump Poised to Start Trade War with Neighbors, Threatens to Raise Tariffs on products coming, in particular from Mexico, to get what he wants on migration, drug trafficking and the relationship with China. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum decided to respond to Donald Trump on customs duties and immigration on Wednesday, November 27.
Claudia Sheinbaum corrects Donald Trump’s inaccuracies, for example in the report of the conversation they had on the telephone. When he simply writes that he convinced Mexico to close the border, the president of Mexico clarifies that this is not the case, but that a plan already exists to prevent migrants from advancing towards the United States.
The Mexican president responded, equally and firmly, with figures and arguments constructed to the blackmail of customs taxes. Mexico wants to show that it wants an adult conversation, it displays a rational position without being impressed by the intimidation of its neighbor. If the United States wants taxes, Mexico will put them back. The consequences will be significant for everyone. Basically, the Mexican government is well aware that this is a test. In a political negotiation strategy, before coming to power, Donald Trump wants to scare and impose himself on his partners.
Mexico has been in the sights of the United States and Canada for weeks because of its trade relationship with China. Mexico is accused by its neighbors of being a hidden gateway for Chinese products to the common market in North America. In the context of a trade war between the United States and China, this is poorly received.
This is not trafficking in Chinese products relabeled “made in Mexico”. But, through a phenomenon of regional relocation, companies, particularly Chinese, which wish to be closer to American consumers, are setting up in Mexico. They build factories and use Asian products which are manufactured and then assembled on Mexican territory. These products are then exported to the United States, this time tax-free, thanks to the free trade agreement. This is a subject to be taken very seriously by Mexico because the country cares above all about this treaty which unites the three countries, but a revision is planned for 2026. The United States and Canada, increasingly protectionists, have already put forward the idea of renegotiating the terms.
