Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie Commentary (Updated April 10, 2025): A breakout star in Netflix’s British series “Adolescence,” Owen Cooper is the predicted frontrunner in this year’s supporting actor (limited) race — and for good reason. As the emotionally fragile and unpredictable teenage son in Stephen Graham’s harrowing drama, Cooper delivers a performance of remarkable depth and vulnerability. At just 15 years old, the young British actor could make Emmy history as the youngest ever nominated in this category.

The current record for the youngest male actor to win belongs to Scott Jacoby, who was 16 when he won for the 1973 TV movie “That Certain Summer.” Notably, “When They See Us” nominee Asante Blackk was 17 when he earned a nod in 2019. Cooper could break both records — and he’ll have to contend with his Netflix co-star Javier Bardem, who is drawing attention for his chilling performance in “Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story.”

In addition to Cooper, “Adolescence” also features a worthy supporting turn from Ashley Walters. A mainstay of British television, known for “Top Boy,” Walters delivers a powerful, understated performance as Luke Bascombe, a detective investigating the murder of a young girl.

In Hulu’s gritty boxing drama “La Máquina,” Diego Luna plays Andy Lujan, the best friend and manager of Esteban “La Máquina” Osuna. His shady persona entangles the boxer in the criminal underworld. Luna’s presence in the second season of Disney+’s “Andor,” which is currently airing, could also help bolster his visibility with voters.

A rising talent, Rhenzy Feliz delivers memorable moments as Victor, a teenager desperate to escape the slums of Gotham in HBO/Max’s “The Penguin.” Acting alongside Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti, breakout star Feliz holds his own with striking emotional range and simmering intensity.

Known for his indie sensibilities, Jay Duplass surprises with an affecting performance in “Dying for Sex,” FX’s emotional roller coaster of a limited series, which could factor alongside frontrunning co-star Michelle Williams.

This category is one of the more enigmatic of the season and could take several different turns. Stay close.

(The list of predicted nominees and contenders is incomplete and will be updated every Thursday throughout the TV Awards season.)
