Ecuador declares a state of emergency due to the energy crisis

Quito, April 20 / WAM / Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced the imposition of a state of emergency for two months due to the energy crisis currently afflicting the country, which led to rationalization of consumption.

Noboa issued a presidential decree stating: “A state of emergency is declared due to the serious internal unrest and deteriorating social situation throughout the country, resulting from the exceptional situation of power outages, in order to ensure the continuity of providing electricity services to the population.”

According to the decree, the state of emergency will last for 60 days with the aim of ensuring sufficient time to solve the problem of energy shortages and ensuring electricity supply at the present time. The presidential decree emphasizes the mobilization of the police and armed forces in the country in order to secure and protect vital energy infrastructure facilities.

Ecuador is facing a severe energy crisis due to a complete shutdown of hydroelectric power plants across the country amid a record drought, as well as the suspension of electricity supplies from neighboring Colombia due to problems in generating electricity.
