A border town in southern Texas has been named the most obese city in America, according to a new study.
In a report ranking 100 US cities, McAllen took the top spot, as nearly half of the adults in the 146,000-person town are obese, while one in three are considered overweight.
McAllen also ranks in the top 10 for both heart disease and obesity rates and has the highest share of people who don’t exercise, according to the researchers.
All of the cities in the top 20 were spread out through the south, an area long plagued by obesity and chronic diseases like diabetes.
Little Rock, Arkansas, and Jackson, Mississippi came in second and third place, scoring 84 and 83.4, respectively.
Researchers blamed a lack of health educators and access to healthy foods for these southern cities’ growing waistlines.
Mobile, Alabama, and Knoxville, Tennessee, rounded out the top five.
Meanwhile, Honolulu, Hawaii, was America’s least obese of the 100 cities, which experts believe could be due to its focus on exercise and access to healthy foods.

McAllen, Texas (seen here), is the most obese city in America, researchers at WalletHub found in a new study
The rankings come as a record three in four Americans are now considered overweight or obese, according to the latest CDC data.
Chip Lupo, analyst at financial firm WalletHub, who conducted the research, said: ‘Obesity is becoming more and more prevalent in the US, and it’s costing us big time.
‘In the most overweight and obese cities, residents often lack easy access to healthy food and recreation opportunities, so investing in those areas should help improve people’s diets and exercise regimens, and reduce the financial burden overall.’

WalletHub compared 100 of the most populated cities in the US across three metrics: overweight and obesity, health consequences, and food and fitness.
The team then looked at the share of overweight children, teenagers, and adults in each area, as well as projected obesity rates by 2030.
Health consequences measured included high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity-related deaths.
Researchers also evaluated how many residents had access to healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, as well as parks and recreational facilities.
The data was sourced from the CDC, the US Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, USDA, and county health rankings, among others.
The team assigned scores to each metric, with a higher score indicating a worse ranking.
McAllen was crowned the most obese city with a score of 85.
The team found that 45 percent of its adults are obese and another 31 percent are overweight.
McAllen also has the second-highest share of obese teenagers and the fifth-highest share of obese children.
The city has the eighth-highest amount of people with diabetes and the fourth-highest heart disease rate.
The researchers said this could be due to McAllen having the highest rate of physical inactivity in the country.
The team wrote: ‘That may not be entirely their fault, considering McAllen has the second-lowest percentage of residents who live close to parks or recreational facilities.’

Researchers believe McAllen, which sits on the southern border with Mexico, is the most obese city due to low exercise rates and a lack of access to healthy foods

Honolulu, Hawaii (seen here), is the least obese city. The researchers said this is likely due to abundant access to healthy foods and high rates of physical activity
Little Rock, Arkansas, scored an 84 and took second place.
The researchers said this was due to the 203,000-person city having the fourth-highest rate of obesity among children ages 10-17, 23 percent, with nearly another 17 percent of young people being overweight.
Little Rock also has the fourth-highest percentage of adults with high blood pressure and also the fifth-highest heart disease rate.
The researchers attributed Little Rock’s obesity problem to it having the second-least amount of health educators per capita and limited access to healthy foods.
They said: ‘The problem will likely remain for the foreseeable future, too, as Little Rock has the second-highest projected obesity rate for 2030.’
Jackson, Mississippi, was the third fattest city in the US, moving down one spot from second place this time last year. The area scored 83.4.
About 37 percent of adults in the 150,000-person city are considered obese, and Jackson has the second-highest percentage of adults who have had a stroke.
Additionally, nearly 37 percent of adults have high blood pressure, raising their risk of heart attacks and strokes.
The researchers wrote: ‘Not exercising regularly is a big reason why many of Jackson’s residents are overweight and obese. The city has the second-highest rates of physically inactive adults, and many residents lack easy access to healthy food.’
Mobile, Alabama, and Knoxville, Tennessee, rounded out the top five, both scoring 83.
Both cities had the two highest ‘health consequences’ rank, which is based on the amount of adults with high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and deaths from obesity.
Meanwhile, Honolulu, Hawaii, was deemed the least obese city in America with a score of 59.
The researchers found the 1million residents in the metro area had the greatest access to healthy food and exercise of all 100 cities.
The area also had the fourth-lowest rate of chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes and sixth-lowest obesity rate.
