I grew up with strict religious parents who checked my cell phone every night – they were shocked when I got pregnant at 15 with twins

A woman has told the story of how she became pregnant with twins at age 15, despite her strict upbringing.

Karina Amaya, 20, from Lugoff, South Carolina, grew up in a religious family where her parents checked – and often seized – her cell phone every night, and her social time was kept limited.

Despite this she met and began dating her now husband and the father of her twin girls at age 13, keeping the romance hidden by communicating through a secret phone. 

Two years later at age 15, Karina snuck him into her bedroom for the first time which resulted in a shock twin pregnancy. Fearing her parents’ reaction she would end up hiding it for five months before her mother’s suspicions forced her to confess.

Looking back, Karina recalls feeling ‘terrible’ at the time. She said: ‘I felt really bad… like I didn’t know… I just felt really bad. And I also started crying.

‘I felt bad because I didn’t know how my dad felt about it or what he was going to tell me. I thought he was going to kick me out of the house’.

Although Karina kept her pregnancy a secret for almost five months, it was no easy task. 

After weeks of successfully hiding that she was with child, Karina said her mother became suspicious, pointing to her daughter’s protruding belly and ‘skinny’ frame as the reason.

At 5am that same morning Karina said her mother marched her to a gas station to purchase a pregnancy twist – which ‘of course was positive’.

The former high school student – who graduated via an online class – said she was initially clueless to the fact that she was carrying identical twins, as were her parents.

It wasn’t until she attended her first ultrasound  that she discovered the shocking news.

Hit with the double whammy of learning their daughter was not only pregnant, but with twins – for her parents it was a hard pill to swallow.

She explained: ‘Once they found out, my dad went to his room and he closed the door and he stayed in there and my mom she started crying on the floor’.

But later on things would take a turn for the better as her parents slowly came to terms with the news. 

She recounted the moment her father came home from work one evening to deliver the supportive words she had longed to hear. 

He told her ‘everything is going to be fine’ and that he would support his daughter though her first motherhood journey.

Karina also shared that her dad began building his incoming granddaughters’ their very own room to enjoy.

Meanwhile Karina’s mother stood by her side and showed up to every medical appointment and ultrasound with her.

Later on Karina spoke on her parents’ excitement that the girls would be the first twins in the family. 

In another video Karina shared a second reason for why motherhood had come as a surprise – she revealed she had used ‘protection’ during intercourse.

After noticing her period was late by a month she chose to take a pregnancy test, however kept the results hidden from her parents for another four months.

‘When I saw the two lines, I was just like what?!’ said Karina.

‘When my mom found out about it I started crying… she hugged me and she was there to support me’.

She also shared her reasons for ‘keeping’ her pregnancy, despite what society may think about her.

She added: ‘Many people judge us, I’ve gotten many hate comments… that I should’ve aborted – that my future and my life were over.

‘Being a mom means something really special to me. I know what my mom means to me so I know what I will mean to my girls’.

The mother-of-two also painted a realistic portrayal of what it’s like to raise twins and has conceded that it is ‘hard work’.

She also shared advice for other teenagers looking to follow in her footsteps; she warned them against but showed her support for anyone already going through something similar.

Five years on from her ordeal, Karina has put it all down to destiny: ‘I feel like I was meant for twin motherhood’ she said. ‘Of course it’s difficult, but motherhood is hard in general’.

The content creator bravely shared her story on TikTok and has since received messages of ‘love’ and support. 

One person commented: ‘This is so sweet, we can’t expect our parents to be happy at first because that’s not what they want for us, especially at a young age – but some will support’

Another person said: ‘Girl you’re so strong and I’m so proud of you. I’m so happy that your parents were there for you regardless. Sending you so much love’.
