In the US, police in Ohio released a video of a dying man in handcuffs repeating the words “I can’t breathe.” Body camera video released Thursday by the Canton Police Department shows officers arresting a man named Frank Tyson at a bar. He was charged with leaving the scene of a single-vehicle accident on April 18. Tyson, 53, died at a local hospital. Reuters reportsthat the arrest episode recalled the death of black George Floyd at the hands of police in 2020.

The Canton Police Department could not comment on the video posted online by several local media outlets or confirm the details of the incident.

The video, which lasts more than half an hour, begins with a patrol car running over a car that crashed into an electrical pole. A passerby tells the officer that the driver of the car fled into a nearby tavern.

Police are then seen entering the establishment and finding Tyson at the bar. During a verbal altercation, law enforcement officers tried to grab the suspect’s hands. He shouted that they were trying to kill him and demanded to call the sheriff.

The police knocked Tyson down and handcuffed him. One of them put his knee on the detainee’s back, near his neck. 30 seconds passed in this position.

Tyson can be heard repeatedly saying, “I can’t breathe. I can’t… don’t put pressure on my neck.” The policeman shouted, “Calm down” and “Are you okay” before standing up.

The ensuing footage shows Tyson lying motionless, face down, for about six minutes while officers talk to bar patrons.

Eight minutes after the officers handcuffed Tyson, they removed the handcuffs and began performing CPR. Paramedics then arrive on the scene and carry Tyson out of the tavern on a stretcher and into a waiting ambulance.

Frank Tyson died at a local hospital, according to WKYC, an NBC affiliate in Cleveland. Reuters was unable to immediately confirm this information. The official cause of death has not been established.

The described incident is reminiscent of the May 2020 arrest of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

The four-year-old video shows white officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes. The black detainee pleaded for his life, repeating the words “I can’t breathe” before falling silent. Video footage shot on the phone spread across all social networks and caused a wave of protest against police brutality in different countries.
